Cleaning vinyl records is essential for maintaining their sound quality and prolonging their lifespan. Here's some steps you can follow to clean your records:
-
What you'll need: You'll need a soft brush, a microfiber cloth, a cleaning solution (such as isopropyl alcohol or a commercial vinyl cleaner), and a clean, flat surface to work on.
-
Dust the record: Gently use a soft brush to remove any dust or debris from the surface of the record. Brush in a circular motion, starting at the centre of the record and moving outward.
-
Apply cleaning solution: Apply a few drops of cleaning solution to the microfiber cloth or directly on the record (be sure to not to get any on the label) and gently wipe the surface of the record in a circular motion, starting at the centre and moving outward. Be sure to cover the entire surface of the record, including the grooves.
-
Rinse the record: Using a clean, damp microfiber cloth, gently rinse the surface of the record to remove any cleaning solution residue. Be sure to remove all moisture, as moisture can damage the record.
-
Dry the record: Gently blot the surface of the record with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Do not rub the surface, as this can create static and attract dust.
Repeat these steps for both sides of the record. You should also clean the record before each use to ensure the best sound quality.
Note: Some experts recommend against using water on records, as it can cause warping and other damage. If you choose to use water, be sure to thoroughly dry the record after rinsing.
